Chicago Bike Winter Fashion show photos

Last weekend I had a blast working with Holly Rhode of the impeccable vintage clothing site www.lucitebox.com, Hair and Make up artist Christopher Conner, and these fine cycling ladies: Liz, Dottie, Ash, Lisa, and Kim. We worked on some photos to publicize the upcoming Bike Winter Fashion Show, and thanks to all of these ladies (and one gentleman), I think they turned out great!

You might recognize Dottie from her blog Lets Go Ride a Bike, or from one of my photos here. Both Liz and Kim are involved with West Town Bikes the non-profit community bike shop that focuses on under-served populations and youth programing. Ash organizes the group rides Chicago Kidical Mass and Critical Lass, and has a blog about family cycling called One Less Mini Van. Lisa is very involved in the cycling community and I randomly photographed her and family here. What a great group of ladies to represent the cycling community.

Phew, can't believe I haven't posted since Friday. I've actually been sitting on a bunch of photos, but I've been too busy to edit them!

Some fun upcoming stuff: I shot the promo photos for the Bike Winter Fashion show. I'll be posting photos soon, but I just wanted to show this outtake. While photographing the Bike Winter ladies in the park, I spied this little lady riding like the training wheels came off that day. What are you wearing? My favorite jeans skirt that I bought many years ago and always wear when I am in the mood for a comfy day (normally Friday's). My boots are my favorite boots for biking during winter; comfortable and warm. My aunt bought me these boots when I visited The Netherlands last Christmas the are called Nature Breeze and only cost $20. My coat is a Michael Kors and bought it last year (was amazingly cheap :) ). It is warm and long enough to ride a bike with during Chicago winters.
Tell me about your bike, and where you got it? I bought my bike at REI in Oakbrook. I am riding a GT 3 speed chocolate color, although to me it still looks more like blue. 3 speed was my max when I decided what kind of bike to buy. My dad warned me that the more speed on your bike the more maintenance I would have to do myself. Since I am not a handy girl, I thought this would be the best option for me. I call my bike my little best friend in the city. He never lets me down and is always there and waiting for me when I need him.
Where are you going? I am going home. I got off early from work today since I will be travelling to South America tomorrow and still needed to pack a lot of stuff.
Why ride? It gives me a wake up call in the morning and relaxes me
when I ride home after a day at the office.
Favorite ride? On the Lakefront path during summer. So great to see people running, having fun and the beautiful view over Lake Michigan always makes my day.
While riding you …? I am thinking about everything that pops into my mind. From to-do list to things that happened at work that day to what to eat that night.
How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago
more bike friendly?
More bike lanes would make Chicago much more bike friendly. I am from Amsterdam, and over there cars, pedestrians and bikes are used to each other as users of the same road and therefore accidents rarely happen. Unfortunately, I can't count the times that I have been almost hit by a car (cab) on one hand anymore.

And other cool, funny tips or stories?
When I am riding my bike with high heels and a dress during summer I get so many questions (especially from guys) but as all the Lady's on this website know: riding your bike in high heels is not hard. Just get on that bike and pedal:).

What are you wearing?

My red winter coat. I'm an identical twin, and when we were little, my mother, an
artist, used to dress me in red and my sister in blue because I looked better in red
and my sister in blue. But, for years I wore purple. Then, when I was buying this
coat, I tried on a purple coat and then this red one. And, y'know, I looked better in
the red. Mom was right!

Tell me about your bike, and where you got it? This is my errand bike. I’ve had it a long time, and I'm not sure what it is or where I got it, but I love the baskets. I lock my lock to the baskets through my bag handles.

Where are you going? I love this secret path over the expressway. It's a shortcut between Milwaukee Avenue and Elston available only to bicycles and pedestrians – one of the many
benefits of cycling in Chicago instead of driving!

Why ride? Freedom! Relaxation. Sanity! No parking tickets or hassles.

Favorite ride? I enjoy pace line group rides. For pace lines or distance rides, I ride my other bike. When the group is working together as a group, the synergy is magical.

While riding you …? I collect smiles. I smile at the people I pass and try to get them to smile back at me.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? Bikes on Metra trains and CTA buses are a great innovation. They've saved me from
my stubbornness a number of times!

And other cool, funny tips or stories? A Frenchman asked me out on a date. The best way for me to get to the restaurant was by bike, so I biked for the first time in heels. When we were leaving the restaurant and he realized I had biked there, he asked, surprised, "You biked in heels?" And, then, added approvingly, "Very French!" Since then, I've found that both men and women are impressed, but I'll let you in on a secret: it's not difficult to bike in heels. Just put on your heels, get on the bike, and pedal!

What are you wearing? A bunch of stuff my mom gave me and my favorite plain wool coat that I've had for years and the zipper is broken but I never want to stop wearing it. Also, a backpack instead of a purse because I do a lot of grocery shopping. It holds a lot more than you'd think it does.

Tell me about your bike, and where you got it? I ride a blue, Schwinn Collegiate 3 Speed. I got it at Working Bikes! I used to have a super fast road bike but the wheels were stolen TWICE and I finally just sold the frame and bought this bad boy. I have so much more fun riding it. The seat is huge, it's like biking around on a La-Z-Boy.
Where are you going? I'm going to the grocery store and then home to make a huge breakfast. I believe you should always start the day with 2 eggs. Unless you're vegan.
Why ride? Because I hate waiting for the bus and I make a lot of stops.
Favorite ride? Ooh, I don't know. I just love riding around when the sun is setting.
While riding you …? Think up jokes.
How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? I guess, is there a way to get car drivers and bike riders to not feel like enemies? A little bit of empathy on both parts would be nice.
And other cool, funny tips or stories? Oh gosh, I don't know. Be careful out there on the snow. I slip and fall on my bike a lot and it really never stops being embarrassing.

I am totally obsessed with Veronica's Loeffler Randall rain booties.

What are you wearing:
Loeffler Randall rain booties, the best shoes ever for biking in Chicago's gray months. Unlike a lot of boots, they're slim enough to fit easily into toe cages and they're made of rubber so street grime isn't an issue. I picked up these tights last time I was in NYC at Uniqlo. They're part of the brand's Heattech line and are super warm without being thick. I'm mad I only bought one pair. Uniqlo can't come to Chicago soon enough! In the winter when I'm not biking, I'm walking. I need a coat that I won't overheat or feel constricted in. This one is from Nau and it's the closest you'll find to a sleek version of the default puffy parka. It's micro down so there's no waddling around looking like Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. The dress was a gift (but it's from Anthropologie), and my helmet is a Bern.

Make/model color of your bike, and where you got it?

A single speed Cannondale Capo that I got at Kozy Cyclery a few years ago. I call him Ninja. He's very light and fast, an ideal city bike. Unfortunately, he's not the ideal type of bike for this time of year, but we've had such an abnormally warm winter that I decided to just say screw it and ride unless there's snow on the ground.

Where are you going?
I'm going to work in River North.

Why ride?
I ride because I'm impatient. Why wait at a bus stop for 20 minutes to go two miles when you can hop on your bike and be there in 10 minutes? It's efficient. I hate wasting time. And it's a great way to see the city. If you're not out walking, running or riding, you're missing out on discovering all the hidden secrets of the city.

Favorite ride?I love the West Loop/Fulton Market area. It's quiet but distinctively urban and every time I ride through I discover a new interesting building or tucked away business I'd never noticed before. The downside is the streets are pretty chewed up. I got three flats in a month riding around back there.

While riding you…?Make to-do lists in my head and enjoy the scenery.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly?

I think Chicago is an extremely bike friendly city, but the roads themselves could do with more maintenance. No one likes riding on pothole and loose gravel covered streets. There should also be more bike racks and a better public bike share program. Anyone in any area of the city should be able to walk out of a train station and leave on a share bike.

And other cool, funny tips, shout outs or stories?

Bike in heels often, wear a helmet always. People need to get over their "I'm-not-wearing-a-helmet" crap. This is the third largest city in the U.S., shut up and put it on. No one looks good in them, let's look bad in them together.

What are you wearing? A thrifted coat I recently discovered wasn't actually waterprooof, some ridiculous purple spandex leggins I got from the H&M clearance section a few years ago, a wooly sweater, hand-me-down mini skirt that's short enough to ride easy in but better than wearing just spandex off the bike, fleecy cyling cap & neckscarf I made myself and LAKE cycling boots. I bought these shoes last Autumn and for the first time in five winters my feet were actually warm during my long commute. They've totally changed how I feel about winter in Chicago. The company is run out of Evanston, IL and they've been making cycling shoes (and only cycling shoes) since the 80s. They know what they're doing and they know how cold this town can get. They may be the most expensive article of clothing I've ever owned, but I would have paid twice that for how warm they keep me. Wet or cold feet can really ruin everything.

Tell me about your bike, and where you got it? This lil' pack mule is a burgundy and gold Raleigh from the early eighties. She's steel & sturdy & been through a lot. I originally bought her from "Nearly New" bike shop on Halsted in 2008, but she's had a bunch of rebuilds, wrecks, and reincarnations since then. At this point she's mostly my winter beater. I just got these handle bars installed at the uptown Johnny Sprockets for the winter. Upright riding seems to work so much better in the slush that Chicago becomes ones the snows hit. Unless it's really gross out -- for those "oops-we-haven't-salted-your-neighborhood-yet" days I have a banana seat kiddie bike I like to ride - its so much closer to the ground that inevitable black ice wipe outs are easier to giggle through.

Why ride? It's the most incredible way to experience a city. You're going a little slower... you're seeing everything... Your senses are sharpened as you're focused on staying alive... and each neighborhood comes to shine and smell and feel different -- the chocolate aromas downtown, the doughy bread cloud over Augusta at Kedzie, the sweet mulch smell of Sacramento as you come over the pond in Humboldt Park... The view of the skyline as you hit the top of the Diversey bridge... You can't really get these things on the bus or train or in a car. Also, the camaraderie! Being not the only crazy person on your bike in a downpour or in the snow is an incredible rush. Making conversation at a stoplight, or saying good morning as you pass someone (or get passed!), stopping to offer tools or swap stories if you see another cyclist walking their flatted bike -- these are things you miss out on in the aloof fortresses that are automobiles. Also ... the days that I don't ride I sort of feel like I never actually wake up.

Favorite ride? Any time I can get someone else to ride on my tandem with me is a great ride, especially if there is some sort of musical instrument involved. But if I'm by myself, I'd have to say either the funky narrow bridge over the river at Wilson... or the huge empty boulevards down by my house... in Garfield Park there's rarely any car traffic on the side streets and when there is they're pretty nice to you... the streets are well maintained and the houses are old and massive and beautiful and I swear there's a new little garden or community farm popping up every month. Though I do also really like the views of the city from Elston -- both Elston and Grand are great for riding toward downtown -- there's almost no pedestrian traffic, no cars making really bad decisions while trying to find parking, and there's no bus to contend with... basically I just absolutely hate riding on Milwaukee more than anything.

While riding you …? signal, watch for taxis, try not to piss off pedestrians, dream about hitting certain cars with my sling shot, smile at other cyclists, plot to take over the world.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? I know this is going to sound extremely far fetched, but I would love to see whole streets taken away from cars and given over to cycling. In Portland the city planers are pretty great about making certain side streets much too slow for an automobile (with round-abouts, four way stops, etc) in order to keep cars on the main through-ways and let bikes have the littler ones. It's brilliant. Can you imagine if Damen or Jackson or Augusta, or ANY streets were bikes-only arteries? Or if we could just get the Bloomingdale Trail built? I'd go miles out of my way on my commute JUST TO HAVE A CHUNK OF IT BE CAR-FREE.

But really, I do think Chicago is one of the better big cities for cycling. It's crazy flat and easy to navigate and I think a significant percentage of drivers here have ridden a bike at one time in their lives (or at least know what a "bicycle" is -- which is more than I can say for LA, where I am from). If we could just force everyone who lives here to ride a bike to work for one week in the summer I think every driver and pedestrian would be a ton better about being nice to cyclists all year round.

Until these sorts of lofty dreams come to life it's really up to us (especially us ladies), to convince everyone we know that riding bikes is totally rad, completely doable, tons of fun, and lets you eat everything you want all of the time. Because having people join us out there on the streets, creating converts for our cause, is really the best thing we could possibly hope for. Hand-me-downs help -- giving away your old winter jackets or cycling shorts or rain slickers or still-working parts to newer cyclist friends really helps them get more comfortable out there. I know, it helped me. I'm excited to return the favor any chance I get.

And other cool, funny tips or stories? Wool, wool, wool. It will save your winter ass. I can't tell you how much i wish someone had told me this earlier. And it sure doesn't stink after one ride like all that other expensive synthetic stuff on the market. And its like $2 a sweater at Villiage Discount. There's simply nothing else like it.

I should mention I usually wear my Bern helmet as well - but I ran out the door this morning and forgot it.
Make/model color of your bike, and where you got it?
My baby is a pink De Fietsfabriek Oma from J.C.Lind Bike Co (back when his shop was called De Fietsfabriek USA). My dream bike was an amazing gift from my boyfriend, who surprised me with it for my birthday two years ago. I thought he was at work and I was sitting outside having lunch with a girlfriend (who was in on the surprise) and he randomly came walking up with it. The first thing out of my mouth was “Why do you have that bike?” I was speechless and I cried. Her name is Pinky Tuscadero because she’s one tough bitch. One day while out riding, some dude yelled to me “Hey Pinky Tuscadero” and it stuck. It’s the perfect name for my pretty pink tank of a bike. When I wear my leather jacket she becomes Leather Tuscadero. Yeah, I’m a total dork.
Why ride?
I’ve had a bike since I was a little girl, and I can’t think of many times in my life I haven’t had one or two or five bikes at a time. It’s simply the best way to get around. When I travel, I always rent a bike when I can. I've ridden in Beijing, Brussels, Paris, Lido (a small sandbar/island off Venice), Rome, Buenos Aires, NYC, Napa Valley and Amsterdam (which is my favorite city ever - did I mention my boyfriend is Dutch?).
Favorite ride?
I’m a summer girl - so I love riding to the beach and up and down the lakefront on hot summer days.
While riding you …?
Take in the scenery, think about things I need to do and watch out for crazy drivers.
How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly?
It seems simple enough – everyone on the road should be kind to one another and respect each other. I think it would be a great learning experience if ALL car drivers had to ride a bike and all bike riders had to drive a car for a few days. Sometimes it’s good to see things from another perspective.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly?
It'd be nice if streets were wider so bikers don't have to fight for room between traffic and parked cars.

If you're riding in wedges/heels with 4' or more make sure you adjust your bike seat, otherwise your thighs are going to get quite the workout haha

Where are you going? I'm headed north to the Bike Winter Film Festival.

Tell me more about your bike and where you got it? This is really sad, but this bike was stolen the day after this picture was taken. I got it from someone on Craigslist, actually as a replacement for the last bike that I got stolen two months ago, so I only had it for a short while. But I did put a lot into it by switching to straight bars and adding a basket, fenders, a Brooks saddle, and flat-proof tires. *sigh*

***** Follow up: Allison's bike was found by the good folks at Working Bikes when someone tried to sell it to them. They checked the Stolen Bike Registry and saw Allison's post about her missing bike. Thankfully she had a VERY recent photo to prove the bike was hers.

Big shout out to the peeps at Chicago Stolen Bike Registry. We are super lucky to have a stolen bike registry in Chicago started by fellow cyclists. Thank you, thank you, thank you from Bike Fancy!

Why ride? Oh man, so many reasons. Mainly: it's the most enjoyable way for me to get from a to b. I feel like other forms of transportation make me feel alienated: from myself as I become part of the crowded bus or line of traffic, and from my own experience because I'm not as directly involved in the journey. I have more freedom as a cyclist to choose my own schedule, route, and stops, and I can depend on myself to get there, instead of being at the mercy of a late train, a rise in gas prices, or an unexpected traffic jam.

What are you wearing? I'm wearing a pashmina scarf and thrifted dress & shoes. It's super weird that I can dress like this in January, this year.

Favorite ride? In Chicago I like to ride at night, when there's less traffic, and I'm free to jam really fast without being as worried about keeping a hand on the brake. My favorite ride, though, was when I lived in Santa Cruz, and part of my commute home was like 15 minutes of descent. It made the climb up there totally worth it. One part of it was on a bike path down this sort of rolling pasture surrounded by forest, and you could see the ocean. Oh man! You can see it on Google street view! (http://g.co/maps/558ar) It's even prettier when the grass isn't dormant. It's like riding through a painting.

While riding you …? In the city, I mostly try not to die. I'm frequently on busy streets because of my commute. I usually assume every car I see is going to do the stupidest thing so that when they do it, I'm ready to react. If my mind starts to wander, I usually get brought back to reality pretty quickly when I have to swerve or brake really fast to avoid a collision.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or be more bike friendly?

They're already starting to do this, but I think CDOT could make it way more inconvenient to drive in Chicago, and slowly people will start to use transit, walk, and cycle as transportation. Car traffic is my #1 stressor as a cyclist, because I feel like so many drivers don't realize that they're operating a deadly weapon. I think it could have a sort of snowball effect in that if there are less cars on the road, people feel safer and cycling becomes more attractive, and if they decide take their bike instead of car, there are less cars on the road, and people feel safer, and on and on.

Any other tips? I try to have an extra bike around in case of a flat or other unexpected mechanical failure, and it can also double as a guest bike. I'm a big fan of having an extra of everything, really: gloves, lock, and helmet especially. Oh, and the best secret about biking in Chicago is: don't stop riding in the winter.

Where are you going? Meeting for brunch with a bunch of other lady bike nerds, which rules.

Tell me more about your bike and where you got it? It's a cream Linus Dutchi 8. I got it at Dutch Bikes, which sadly closed recently.
Why ride? It's fun and it feels good, and I almost never get stuck in traffic.

What are you wearing? I made this skirt, my sweater is vintage, thrifted, the Jacket is thrifted, but I think it's Gap. Boots are Fluevog.
Favorite ride? I love riding the lakefront path on fall mornings when it's relatively empty, and taking quiet side streets late at night.

While riding you …? Look at stuff. A bike, especially an upright bike, gives you a great vantage point from which to take in the city.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? At the City level, I like the protected bike lanes, and would love to see some bike boulevards. But one of the things I love about Chicago is what ordinarily people do to make it easier to bike in Chicago, year round, like Bike Winter and all the social cycling groups.

Any other tips? Winter biking is a really good excuse to wear legwarmers!

So I put my camera away for the week, and I have been locked away at Bike Fancy headquarters analyzing a years worth of data from my interviews with Chicago cyclists. I focused on the question "How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly?

Below are the results. Thanks to Steve Vance from The Grid for his statistician's guidance.

22% said– More courtesy/awareness from both drivers and cyclists
19% said– Build more bike lanes
14% said– Fix potholes and resurface the roads
13% said– Build divided bike lanes, car-free streets, and other cycling infrastructure

Since that’s never going to happen, whatever needs to be done to deal w/the drivers who don’t want us out there & the ones who are just plain bad - Education, enforcement, & dedicated & protected bike lanes. (& thanks Active Transportation Alliance for working on these things & more)

And other tips? Wear the appropriate clothing & you can ride most of the winter, often more comfortably & w/less hassle than cramming your down-encased self into an overheated 'el' car.

Tell me more about bike, and where you got it?
My bike, Penny, is a '70s Schwinn Suburban. I spotted her years ago in a thrift store on the south side. I went back the next day at 6:00 am to get half off the price! I had the bike in storage until the folks at Boulevard Bikes installed new wheels, brake pads, a new chain and a basket. I don't often ride this bike, so it's great that you caught me today on Penny, my pretty parade bike.
What are you wearing?
I'm pretty heavily layered because I plan to be out all day. I'm wearing a merino wool Icebreaker sweater under a vintage cashmere cardigan. This skirt is from one of my favorite indie fashion concerns, Made with Love By Hannah. I have on a pair of tights under my Smartwool leggings, red Vans, and a high-viz bicycling jacket.
Why ride?
I can't imagine living in the city and not riding my bike. The first years I lived in Chicago, my bike sat in the basement. I used to work in the West Loop and was terrified of riding in Chicago. I didn't know how to dress, how to carry things, or how to make things easier by riding assertively or taking quiet streets. Now, after nine years of riding anywhere and everywhere, my fear has subsided and I absolutely love being on my bike. I'm a dog walker. My daily dog walker route is a ten mile loop. Driving a car to walk the dogs is not at all efficient. It's a lot harder to deal with my car than just hopping on my bike. What's more, it makes me feel awesome!
While riding you...
I try to enjoy the scenery and relax, but I admit that sometimes I ride fast. My other bike is a road bike and she loves to go fast, especially when we're headed to and from clients' houses. I know those streets like the back of my hand. Still--I'm intensely focused and alert. Oh, and I always chew gum.
Favorite ride?
I love riding at night and in all seasons. The Chicago Bike Winter Group has been really helpful and encouraging, and I've really developed an appreciation for winter riding. Lately, I've gotten involved with Chicago Critical Lass. That's a really fun ladies group ride. You should come sometime!
How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly?
Ideally, fewer cars! In lieu of that, drivers need to understand that bikes have a place on the road. I get frustrated when some driver honks or treats me like I don't have a right to be on the street. There needs to be some mutual respect and maybe some re-education on defensive driving. Don't they teach that anymore?

What are you wearing? I'm wearing a red hat with awesome ear-warming abilities, blue wrap skirt and boots that are all from thrift stores. My "stuffed animal" coat is from an estate sale in Seattle, and my gloves were my grandma's.

Why ride? Chicago is wonderfully flat - why not?
Favorite ride? I don't know if I have a favorite, but I like biking down Webster Ave at night. No potholes, virtually no street lights or traffic - its perfect.
While riding you …? Worry about all the different ways I could be hit by a car.
How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? Chicago streets need clearly defined bike lanes so bikers can feel safe and drivers can watch where they're going.
Any other tips? Don't bike in Wrigleyville after a Cubs game or some drunk guy will push you off your bike into a telephone poll for a laugh. And wear a helmet!!

What are you wearing? calf-high, high-heeled leather boots I received for Christmas a couple years ago. I started wearing heels again since taking up riding. As the saying goes, it’s much easier than walking in them...and unlike travel by car or train you can go to door to door on a bike. My coat is a Cambridge Raincoat, which is especially designed for cyclists. It is made of water-proof material and has reflective ribbon on the buttons, cuffs, and belt. Underneath I am wearing a sleeveless turtleneck I created from an oversized button-up sweater I bought it at a thrift store. It’s made from the softest merino wool and has lovely chocolate brown stripes. My legwarmers are from the same sweater. My skirt is felted wool, also from a thrift store.
Make/model color of your bike, and where you got it?
My bike soul mate is a Trek Belleville. I call her Michelle, like the song “Michelle ma belle…” She is cream and blue colored. I bought her off of Craigslist from a couple moving to Portland but she originally came from Turin Bicycles in Evanston.
Where are you going? I am on my way home after attending the Women Who Bike Brunch.
Why ride? -Biking is more than a form of transformation. It’s a philosophy and a lifestyle. I started biking because I wanted an eco-friendly mode of travel, but what I discovered was something so much more. Biking is fun, healthy and free! On a bike the city opens up to you; you can go anywhere without restraints of “L” stops, bus routes, traffic headaches or parking struggles. Suddenly the city is full of wonderful places worth going to. When you travel by bike you feel the wind in your face, you smell food from vendors and flowers; you hear music from street performers and kids playing in parks. The world does not rush you by, insular and behind glass, instead you are smack in the middle experiencing it live and in full color. I am also amazed by the Chicago bicycling community. Thanks to The Chainlink and blogs like Let’s Go Ride A Bike and Bike Fancy (of course) I feel like I’m part of an exclusive fun-loving club.
Favorite ride? I think every ride is my favorite. I do tend to ride east on Wilson pretty frequently. Milwaukee Avenue, especially south of Montrose is fun because it is like a superhighway for bikes. I recently took a contract job in Niles and got to commute on the North Branch Trail. It was so peculiar to be battling the traffic on Milwaukee one minute and then to be speeding down a tranquil path through the woods, over bridges and past grazing deer. It was definitely the most peaceful commute I have experienced. Of course nothing compares to riding the Lake Front Path with the wind in your hair and the lake splashing up beside you. Conclusion: Chicago is a fantastic city for riding!
While riding you …? Think. I work through plot holes in the novel I’m writing, brainstorm post ideas for my blog or compose cover letters for jobs I’m vying for. Surprisingly, this does not keep me from paying attention to where I’m going and enjoying the scenery.
How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly?
Well, I think we are headed in the right direction with the promised 100 miles of protected bike lanes. Anything that can be done to make biking as transportation accessible and appealing to regular people especially Parents and senior citizens is a boon to our city. In addition to building of bicycle infrastructure I would advise reduced speed limits on streets with bike lanes and enforcement of the 3-foot passing distance rule. My neighborhood (Jefferson Park) is populated by many senior citizen cyclists, however the majority do not feel safe riding on the streets and stick to the sidewalks. When Grandma has to “break the law” just to feel safe going to the grocery store, it is a clear indication of a need for change.
I love your legwarmers, where did you get them?
I made them!v It’s really easy to make cozy wool legwarmers from the sleeves of an old sweater. Simply cut them off near the shoulders. Determine how tall you want them to be. Cut straight across the top. Turn them inside out. Measure a length of elastic (available at craft stores) to fit either your shin or thigh depending on how tall you want them. Hand- or machine-stitch it shut so that it creates a circle. Slide this onto the top of the legwarmer about 1-2 inches from the edge. Fold the fabric down to cover the elastic and create a hem. Stretch the legwarmer and the band around something while you pin it, making sure the hem is even. Then, sew all the way around (a zig-zag stitch works nicely on a machine). Turn them right-side out and voila, you’ve got cozy legwarmers!

Tell me more about bike, and where you got it? My bike is a Scattante from Performance....got the frame a few years ago and kinda' added stuff over time...my yellow chain is from Irv's bike shop in Pilsen...and the seat and fuschia peddles are both from Rapid Transit in Wicker Park.
Why ride? I ride because it's efficient and fun.....it really is the most time efficient way to get around the city...not paying for a car or contributing negatively to the urban landscape is a bonus.
While riding you... While riding I often think over my day...or kinda' prioritize stuff I gotta get done....try hard to focus on the road though....I have been known to ride and talk on my phone...I know that's not the safest.
Favorite ride? I love riding into any unfamiliar 'hood....urban adventures via bike are the best...

Wider bike lanes....and encourage drivers to bike...at least some of the time. Once a driver has an understanding of what it feels like to bike in the city, they usually are much more aware of cyclists.
I got hit by the Fullerton bus a couple years ago....most intense accident I've been in....the bus side swiped me. I was little scared to ride for a while, but I got back on pretty quick.

Every time I think I've got winter riding all figured out, someone shows me something new! Furry hood over helmet, not a bad solution to winter riding.

Where are you going? To work, which is at an elementary school.
Why ride? It's the fastest and most fun way to get around. I am definitely a late bike bloomer. I am coming up on my 1 year anniversary of cycling being my primary way of getting around the city. I am a part-time filmmaker, and the cinematic view from a ride never gets old.

What are you wearing? Costco's finest imitation down puff coat with gigantic faux fur lined hood, my boyfriend's bike helmet that I think he got in high school, brown and peachy-stiped skirt, grey tights, and my greybrown Game of Thrones-esque tall boots.
Tell me about your bike, and where you got it? I ride a Schwinn Passage. I think it was made in the late or mid 80s, and is "one of the last good Schwinns" according to various bike friends and message boards. The color is midnight blue with a few gold and red accents. If it had a human name I think it would be something in the male tennis star family.
Favorite ride? Through Humboldt Park at night, and the cruise to my house on my own block.
While riding you …? Alternately feel like I am cheating death/am going to be cheated by death. And I sing sometimes!

Lately I have fantasized about street parking only being allowed on one side of the street, and having bike lanes be on the non-parking side. The lane on Kinzie is a dream, so more clearly marked/divided lanes like that make me feel more safe when riding. And posting gigantic signs that say hitting pedestrians equal a huge fine might help as well.
Any thing else? Immediately after this picture was taken a lady screamed at me for being in her way by saying "You think you pay plates?!" I kind of wish there were bike licenses you could pay a small yearly fee for so I too could be entitled to shouting this at people. You think you pay plates?!

Tell me more about your bike and where you got it? My bike's name is Bucky, because when I got it I had previously owned a cruiser, and getting on a road bike felt a little like riding a spirited colt after a complacent trail horse. It's a silver single speed road bike I found on craigslist. The frame is vintage Motobécane Mirage, but the handlebars, wheels, and seat are newer..it's kind of a Frankenbike.
Where are you going? Home to Ukrainian Village. I just finished shopping and have a bagful of wine & groceries!
Why ride? It's often the best way to get anywhere in this city. Plus I really enjoy it, and love the perspective from a bike.
Favorite ride? Grand Avenue. It runs through some really diverse chunks of the city, and there are long, uninterrupted stretches the further west you go. It's also wider & less congested than some of the other main roads.
While riding you …? Alternate between daydreaming and paying serious attention.
How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? More protected bike lanes like the new one on Kinzie would be nice. That demonstrates a real dedication to safer conditions for cyclists, and a validation of our presence on the roads. I think Chicago is generally a comfortable place to ride, though.

It's a burgundy Bianchi "Super" from what I assume is the 70's. I found it at a garage sale a few years ago and upgraded the wheels (hand-built Phil Woods-DT Swiss-gold Velocity Aeroheads) and added a Brooks B72 and Soma Sparrow bars. It's my favorite bike ever.

What are you wearing?
Thrifted Joe's Jeans, awesome Nau winter jacket, RavX biking gloves, Linus bag/pannier, sweet new Onitsuka Tigers, scarf I bought in Thailand last year.

Why ride?
It's hands down the best way to get anywhere in the city! Way faster and cheaper than any other form of transit. And, as I've heard: biking in the Winter is one of the things that makes Chicago's Winter bearable. Amen.

Favorite ride?
Bronzeville. All of the old mansions are amazing, and I like to imagine which one I'd buy and fix up, if I had a spare million.

While riding you …?
Listen to my iPod. It adds a soundtrack to my regular commute, and often gives me a beat to ride to. That said, it's never so loud that I can't hear what's happening around me, so don't worry.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly?

I think that the new bike lanes are a step in the right direction. Any added infrastructure or legality that's pro-biking helps to add more bikers. And more bikers makes Chicago a better city to ride in. I have yet to ride anywhere in the US with a better bike culture (yes, I'm biased).

Fresh from Asia, where folks carry all sorts, of crazy, things on their bikes, I've been feeling a little more daring with what I will strap on to my bike. I've been saving up for a new ride cymbal, found myself up by Guitar Center after work, and had to check out their cymbal selection. Of course, I fell in love with the new AAX Sabian Memphis ride cymbal, and had to get it right then and there. Bull horn handlebars have some unexpected perks– like enough width to carry a dozen Doughnut Vault doughnuts, or a 21 inch ride cymbal, and after a some jerry-rigging, the Memphis ride was not-so-securely attached to my bike. It was slow ride home, and I got more than a few chuckles from my fellow cyclists, but rider and cymbal made it home safe.

What are you wearing? The tag says it's from Cole Haan, but I got it at a flea market. My hat's from Una Mae's, and my scarf was a present.

Tell me more about your bike and where you got it? My ride was custom made for me by my pals at On the Route on Lincoln Ave. I fell in love with the Soma mixte frame at first glance and was in the market for a spritely upright bike anyway and what they built far surpassed my expectations. It's beautiful to look at and an absolute joy to ride.

Why Ride? Because it is fun!!!!!!!!!!!

Favorite ride? My commute to work is actually my favorite because I pass through so many cityscapes on my way there. Old neighborhoods with elm trees and greystones, an industrial metal forgery, downtown views, the river...it's so pretty and makes me fall in love with Chicago every day.

What are you wearing? Earrings made from my old house keys and boots that were a gift from my mother. Necklace, coat, hoodie, slip and skirt were all thrift store finds. I love that feeling of putting in the patience and time and finding something really great for $3.

Tell me more about your bike, and where you got it? 1982 Yellow Huffy Timberline 3 Speed. I found it at Carlos & Sarah's Surplus of Options when I was looking for a winter bike last year. It was stripped of all it's cables and covered in rust so it seemed the perfect bike to put through a winter. After fixing it up though it has become my favorite ride.

Why ride? I started bike commuting when I moved to Chicago to save money and take time off my daily travel. Now it's a full blown obsession. I love how active and adventurous life feels when you ride everywhere. It's neat to think about the freedom such a simple machine can give you. I also appreciate the camaraderie I feel with other riders.

Favorite ride? Coming home from work late at night when I'm bundled head to toe against the cold and it's snowing that really big fluffy snow that has covered everything and sparkles amber in the streetlights. It's so incredibly surreal. Also, the moment when you reach the top of any bridge. The rivers look beautiful and that wonderful feeling of getting to ride down the hill you just came up.

While riding you …? Constantly look and listen for cars/pedestrians/cyclists/doors/potholes/construction. If the ride is stress free enough I like to people watch and check out architecture. Language podcasts and books on tape have been a fun multitasking thing to listen to.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? Maintained roads and abundant, well planned bike lanes would be amazing. But until then, a little empathy from drivers would help. I dare any daily drivers to bike commute for a week and not feel different about what it means to share our common rights to the road.

Where are you going? I am headed to a meeting before work.
Tell me more about your bike, and where you got it? My bike is a vintage Raleigh Super Course MK II, I'm not sure of the exact year but i think its early 70's made in England. The awesome people at Lugs restored her for me.
Why ride? I ride because I don't own a car and wouldn't own one living in the city and riding is so much easier that relying on public transportation.

Favorite ride? I don't have a specific favorite ride throughout the city, but I do love my Sunday morning, with no particular place to go, rides with my boyfriend.
While riding you …? I never listen to any music or try and multi task while I'm riding. Its dangerous enough bobbing and weaving through the traffic and watching for car doors.
How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? The biggest problem i encounter are the pot holes, some streets are just littered with them and a flat tire is just a bummer on your day. I appreciate the bike lanes but would appreciate even more would be drivers paying attention to bikers. It's so dangerous to bike in the city, you have to pay attention to so much, one wrong move could mean your life. So a little extra caution from a driver is much appreciated.

Make/model color of your bike, and where you got it? It's a Marinoni that I acquired on ebay for a song. a friend's dad powdercoated it red for me, and another friend built it up for me.

Why ride? it's a pleasing way to get from here to there, especially on gorgeous days like these.

Favorite ride? Up milwaukee till it meets elston, then back down elston till it meets back with milwaukee. it's particularly enjoyable in the wee hours of the morning. the southside part of the path is another top contender.

What are you wearing? A large, over-sized, retro blouse from Buffalo Exchange.

Why ride? To save money! Buying passes for transit can get really expensive. Also, its just the most fun way to get from place to place. I find it exhilarating.

Favorite ride? Right now I would probably say taking Milwaukee to downtown...especially at night! There's nothing better then the epic feeling of entering the magical metropolis that is Chicago.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? More bike lanes on all the major streets so that its easier to get around without feeling like your in the way of cars or having to go out of your way for a bike friendly route.

Its hard to believe that is only been 1 year since I posted my first photo and launched Bike Fancy. Honestly, I had no idea if I would make it through the winter, much less a whole year, and find enough interesting people to photograph. Well I have to say– Chicago, you have exceeded my expectations. You are a wonderful cycling city, with friendly, interesting, good-looking people, riding bikes everywhere. I only wish I had more hours in the day to spend exploring all of your neighborhoods on bike.

What are you wearing? I am wearing Red Wing iron rangers, Levi's 501 jeans, Woolrich vest, Pointer Hickory striped jacket and a Hillside chambray scarf.

Why ride? Why drive? I like to keep my carbon imprint low.
Favorite ride? My favorite rides ever were touring through Tuscany, or the ride up the inland sea coast of Japan. However, I think the everyday bike rides even to and from work can be enjoyable.

While riding you …? While riding I sometimes whistle or sing. I sometimes also play my iPhone in my front pocket. No headphones though! Too risky.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? Chicago can make it safer to bike by more pronounced or protected bike lanes, stricter testing for drivers, letting new drivers know that bikes are supposed to be on the road. Bikers should be more cautious as well.

What bike are you riding and where did they get it? Its a Centurion

touring frame built-up to a custom single speed road bike, basically. My bike was built-up by the guys over at Nearly New on Broadway ... upkeep

and modifications by myself and the guys at Boulevard Bikes in Logan

Square.

Favorite ride? That is tough...as crazy as it my sound-- anywhere in the

loop or downtown. I didn't grow up in a city so flying through tons of

traffic, and huge buildings is still pretty surreal for me-- LOVE IT!

While riding you …? Sometimes listen to music, sometimes I film rides-

when I'm in no rush.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike

I think one MAJOR problem is the CTA's rule about no bikes during rush

hours. This is very dangerous since sometimes people get stuck in crazy

weather and are forced to ride in it due to the policy. Over 90% of bike

accident happen in rain.

Other than that--I think a few HARSH examples need to be made of people

who "door" bikers. There are so many people that don’t understand how

dangerous it is to not pay attention while parking and will not pay

attention until there is something being threatened.

So tell me more about the Bicycle Film Festival.

I am the producer of Bicycle Film Festival Chicago. BFF is an

international film festival that is EVERYTHING BIKES! November 4-6 th, 2011, and

Tell me more about your bike and where you got it. I ride a Raleigh Technium. I converted it into a fixed gear a few years ago after I an ex boyfriend of mine gave it to me. It was his father's bike and he was worried it was to flimsy to hold up to in Cleveland's harsh winters and tire hungry potholes. In exchange I built him a chunky tired franken-bike, which was quickly stolen from his porch when he forgot to lock it up.

What are you wearing? I am wearing a pair of Levis 511's, a button down from American Apparel, a pair of FLY London shoes, and leather suspenders by Wrath Arcane. My pal Dana used to design clothing for them, and she and her husband gave them to me as a gift when I officiated their wedding in September.

Where are you going? I am on my way home from a photo shoot for the bar I work at. I thought I should have my look together for the occasion.

Why ride? I ride for a lot of reasons,
1. It's basically the only exercise I really get most of the time.
2. I don't own a car, and I kind of hate taking public transit if i don't have to. It's mostly the waiting and herding parts that I don't like.
3. Riding can be kind of meditative, especially late at night.

Favorite ride? In the city, I like my daily commute a lot, which is just a 20 minute ride down Damen to Montrose. It's got well defined bike lanes, the traffic's not too bad most of the time.

While riding you...? While riding I am just working out ideas for things in my head, making lists. Lots of thinking. And dodging obstacles of course.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? I think Chicago is pretty bike friendly, but like many people, I think the biggest issue is the lack of education within both the driving community and the biking community. I think that if everyone knew the rules, and followed them at least as well as they do other laws there would be a lot less hostility bouncing around, I mean shit still happens and people will still break laws but hopefully the level of respect given to riders would be a lot higher. Maybe.

Tell me about your bike and where you got it? My bike is a 12-year-old Trek hybrid, bought at Village Cycle Center on Wells Street in Chicago.

What are you wearing? Black 501 Levi's,brown tweed sport coat, denim button down shirt, olive green crew neck, and brown casual Allen Edmonds oxfords.

Why ride? It's cheap, it's fun, and (in downtown Chicago, which is where I live) it gets me from here to there very quickly.

Favorite ride? For an enjoyable (and very strenuous, if I choose to push the pace) ride, I like to head south to Chicago's Hyde Park and back, along the Lake Michigan shoreline's bike path.

While riding . . . I just let my mind float -- sort of like a meditative journey on two wheels.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? Use European cities such as Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Stockholm as models, and physically separate bike lanes from motor vehicle traffic -- not just paint lines on street surfaces.

Any other ways we can promote biking? I think all sizable US cities should host "criterium" bike races on their downtown streets every year. These races -- some of whose competitors are world class professional bike racers -- are very exciting, and they add variety to a city's enjoyable downtown attractions.

Why ride? it's usually faster than cabbing in the city, plus it's

While riding you …? I constantly check my surroundings for cars. I've
had a few accidents with cars, and once my bike got totalled. Since
then I assume everybody's the worst driver when I'm riding.

Tell me about your bike, and where you got it? My bike is a 1987 Pink Schwinn Prelude that I got from an old roommate because it was too big for her (we traded bikes). I've had it for almost 10 years now; parts have been modified, replaced, and stolen, but all the folks a Boulevard Bikes keep it going.
Where are you going? After this photo shoot I am going home to walk and hang out with my dog.

What are you wearing? Purple tank layered with a grey tank from Penelope's, orange circle skirt from American Apparel , Pink brand wedge pumps from the clearance rack at Akira shoe store.

Why ride? I ride a bike because it keeps my head screwed onto my body when my mind wanders, makes me happy, conscious of the world, healthy, and has the power to make me feel like a kid, again and again. And its green!
Favorite Ride? I love night rides when I can speed down a deserted street with no speed bumps. Also, I love to ride bikes wherever I travel.
While riding you...? While riding I listen to music and whistle along, trying to match the key. Embarrassingly, when no one is around, I air drum on my handlebars.
How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? I think Chicago has a good start, but could do a lot more to be bike friendly. I would love to see even more divided bike lanes, and some bike-only street programs like Summer Streets in New York city. I see that a lot more people are riding bikes, but there also seems to be increased tension between drivers and cyclists. Just because I ride a bike, doesn't mean I think I am better than someone that is driving, but I see other cyclists that clearly think they are. Conversely, I think drivers need to understand that driving is a privilege, not a right, and that they are operating a 4,000 pound vehicle that could kill someone.

Tell me more about your bike, and where you got it? It's a loaner while my sister has my hot pink Savoy cruiser from the 70's. My girlfriend won this bike in a lottery on Craigslist. She saw it was listed as "free", contacted the guy, and he put her name in a hat with all the other people who wanted it, and she won!

Where are you going? Just cruising around Wicker Park, shopping for summer clothes. I'm going to roadtrip to Central America for the winter so I need more dresses.

What are you wearing? A strapless striped purple sundress and light blue open toe flats.

Why ride? It feels good! I like to feel free to take my own path to anywhere I want to go. It's clean and it's a relaxing way to sneak in some exercise. When you're rolling by at your own pace you notice so much about that city that you would miss in a car.

Favorite ride? I love a moonlight ride from Wicker to Pilsen. I take Hubbard to Morgan and roll through the UIC campus all the way to 18th street.

While riding you …? think a lot about life and what I want to do, where I've been and where I'm going. Sometimes I talk to myself, just thinking out loud to keep myself company.

How can Chicago improve bike infrastructure or make Chicago more bike friendly? Chicago is a great city for biking, but I would love more bike-only trails to criss-cross the city. It would be great too, if there were more regular events to encourage biking, something like Critical Mass, but sponsored and promoted by the city of Chicago.

What are you wearing? Work garb! A belt I found at a vintage store in Siena, Italy, a skirt from a thift store in Soho, working girl footwear, and lots of black, my usual.
Why ride? It builds character and makes life a lot more interesting - people are stopping me on the street to take my picture! Also, I'm living on a volunteer stipend and trying to save money to go to Ecuador.
